Some pet owners believe that dogs, because of their fur, are immune to the cold winter temperatures. This simply is not true. A dog's fur is often not sufficient enough to keep it warm during the winter. Even a dog house with straw or blankets inside may not be enough to keep your pet warm.

Investing in a dog house heater for your pet might be a great solution. A heater operates on standard home electrical current. You may also be able to find a dog house heater that will run on propane or a generator. A licensed electrician can usually install a heater and implement any upgraded electrical systems that might be needed to accommodate your new dog house heater.

Bring a pet indoors is a great idea but not always a practical one, even on the colder winter nights. Some pets are not house trained or simply do not like to be inside. This is when it is most important to give your pet a cozy and comfy outdoor home.

Every dog house needs a bed of straw. At least once a week, remove all old straw and lay a bed of fresh straw on the floor. Some people will put a pallet in their dog house and cover it with straw. This helps keep your pet off the cold floor and adds the warmth of straw to make things even cozier. Remember, hay is different from straw and is not suitable for a dog house. Hay contains bugs, weeds, leaves and other undesirable material that won't make your pup a happy pooch.

Be sure to cover the front entrance with a well-built flap of some type. Carpet squares, often available for free or minimal cost at carpet supply stores, make excellent flaps or doggie doors. Water-proof and well-insulated old sleeping bags can also be used either as bedding or as a heavy-duty door flap. In addition, be sure to place the house in a position where it will not endure direct wind.

The size of your dog house should promote body heat as a natural heating method. A pet's own body heat can be quite beneficial in help your pet stay warm. You do not want to put a puppy or small breed of dog into a large one. This would prevent your small dog from using its own body heat to help improve warmth. You want to choose a dog house that is only marginally larger than your dog, while allowing enough room for your dog to turn around in and lay down in.

By following a few simple steps, you can keep your beloved pet a happy dog, even on the cold winter nights.

Measure Carefully. Most people install a doggie door when their dog is just a puppy, anticipating growth. While it's a good idea to start dogs using one when young from a training perspective, it can also be tricky to know exactly just how big the dog will someday get. Most people overestimate, and end up with a door even an average-sized burglar could crawl through, and that four of your dog could squeeze into. Instead, go with a modestly sized door to start. It's always possible to upgrade to a large doggie door, but downgrading requires an entire door replacement.

Make it Subtle. A gigantic doggie door in the middle of the front door screams 'easy break in' to a burglar. Instead of making it obvious, hide it a bit by putting it on a back door, side door, or any door that cannot be seen from the street. A clever new trick is installing a patio door panel that has one magnetized plastic flap which the dog can walk in and out of. This style of door appears nothing like a traditional doggie door, and will likely be overlooked by the average burglar.

Utilize Technology. While there is no better home alarm system than a pet dog, keep in mind that Rover can also use modern technology for effective home protection. While most people look at a doggie door and think 'no burglar could fit in there,' remember that someone who decides to break into a house in the first place is not working by the same moral code that you are. The person may use tools to open and widen the hole, or even use a small child to crawl in and unlock the door. For these reasons it's important to always be protected with a home security system. Keep motion detectors set in the areas around doggie doors for an added measure of security.

This electronic system allows a dog owner to let his or her dog roam free outside in the yard without the need of a traditional fence or wall to keep it on the property. But just how does a wireless electric dog fence work? Below is a description of a typical system.

The first thing to know is that no wireless radio fence will work for your dog if you don't put the time in to train the dog to obey the system. While most dogs learn very quickly, it does take some effort and patience out of the dog's owner, to get the best results from the system.

There are three main parts or components. There is the wire, the transmitter and the dog collar. The collar is placed and secured around the dog's neck, the wire is buried underground, and the transmitter should be installed in a safe place.

You have to bury the wire underground, running it along the boundary line that you desire. A radio wave signal is sent out from the transmitter to the wire. The wire receives it, then sends it out to a receiver on the dog collar. The distance that the feed can be read is short so if the collar is able to receive the signal, that means the dog has wandered close to the boundary line.

Once the dog gets close, the collar will beep. If the dog persists on moving forward, a correction is produced. This correction is usually a minor electric shock or a spray of an unpleasant odor. Neither is harmful to the dog in any way.
